Ever wanted to make your own Book? December 15, 2015

Do you have lots of photos that you would like to make into a book for yourself or family or friends.  It’s very easy these days to do that.  There are a number of websites you can create your own book. They give you the choice of sizes, covers and even quality of the paper.   You can make anything from Photography to Cook Books, Travel books and Childrens Book.  Publish them yourself but they look so professional.

Here are a few different websites you can check out.  Click on the logo to link to them. I’m sure there are many more.

What is the Internet of Things November 12, 2015

People ask, what is the internet of things.  What does that mean?  Here is a video created by IBM that gives you an idea of what this is all about.

The BBC has run a story on the Internet of things showing a “starter kit” designed to spur on the invention of internet-connected gadgets has been announced as part of a tie-up between two leading tech firms, ARM and IBM.

How to save images from a Powerpoint Presentation November 10, 2015

For Powerpoint 2010

Today I learnt a very clever way of getting all the images out of a Powerpoint Presentation.  My previous post saved each page as an image.  This post tells how to get individual images from each page.

Here is a the way to do it using PowerPoint 2010.

  • Save the Powerpoint presentation as a XPS Document.
  • Rename the saved document, replace the .xps extension with a .zip extension (as XPS documents are actually ZIP files containing a bunch of other files).
  • Extract the ZIP file with your favorite ZIP extractor and check in the Resources\Images folder.

You should find in this folder the images that are stored in the Powerpoint Presentation.

I found this information on the superuser website.

Here they also tell you how to do it with other versions of Powerpoint. (The method is slightly different.)

How to save pages from a Powerpoint Presentation November 9, 2015

Have you ever received a Powerpoint Presentation and wondered how to save the pages?  This is how you can take each page and save it as a jpg or a png.

Open your presentation and then (image below shows steps listed here)

  1. Click Export – below you will see the screen that appears.
  2. Change File Type
  3. Choose whether you want to save them as a PNG or as a JPG.

Easy, now you have all the slides from that presentation in a folder.

Convert image to text

Did you know that you can convert the text from an image file and turn it into a word document?

Google drive is one that does this for you.  I’m sure there are many others but this was  free and easy to use.  The instructions I got from google were not clear to me at first.  The actual name for it is Optical Character Recognition.

This is quoted  from the google support site.

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) lets you convert images with text into text documents using automated computer algorithms. Images can be processed individually (.jpg, .png, and .gif files) or in multi-page PDF documents (.pdf). These are some of the types of files suitable for OCR:

  • Image or PDF files obtained using flatbed scanners
  • Photos taken with digital cameras or mobile phone

Below is a good video of how to convert an image of text to an editable Google Doc.

Info on Free Photoshop alternatives November 8, 2015

I was looking to see if there are any free alternatives to photoshop and I found that there are quite a number.  Photoshop is probably my favourite because I’ve been using it for a number of years.  But friends often ask if there is something that would do just as well, and there are quite a few.  Have a look through the first lot here and I’m going in search of some more.

Digital Paint Tools / SAI Paint Tool

Something I’ve only just found out about.  Paint Tool SAI – Easy Paint Tool.  This is something I’ve never even heard of.  I’m guessing that it must be reasonably popular as there are clever people making brushes to use in this program.  I found this article online andthe artist here is amazing. You will also find links to sai brushes.

Here there is going to be help on all sorts of graphics questions.
